Friday, Friday, Friday!
Entertainment Weekly – ok, so I still really don’t believe someone has the nerve out there to make “Smurfs – the movie” (rendering the little blue guys into CGI), but EW suggested a list of old 1980’s cartoons that ought to be made into movies: Thundercats, Gummi Bears (EW all but printing the theme song, which was kind of catchy and cute in the first place), the Snorks (good grief! I barely remember those Smurf ripoffs), and … Kidd Video! Ohmigod, now that’s just nuts – combining live action and cartoony goodness as the teen band zapped into the alternate universe to fight Master Blaster and singing ’80’s like pop tunes. EW really reached into the past…
I still don’t understand the purpose of the Dukes of Hazzard movie. I mean, it was a pointless tv show (apologies to Tom Wopat and John Schneider, but, the show was just to watch the car get into stupid stuff and listening to the Duke cousins yell “yee haw”). But, oh well. It’s that kind of summer, I guess.
Slate.com explains how Ranch dressing became the Number 1 dressing of the USA. Uh hmm.
Slate’s Dahlia Lithwick argues why the so-called “out-of-touch” judiciary ain’t worth bashing, and is in fact integral to American style democracy.
I’m a comic strip reader, or at least I haven’t given up reading the comics. But, reading the latest edition of “Funky Winkerbean” comic strip is depressing stuff. Wally, Funky’s cousin, is about to step on a landmine in Afghanistan. He may lose a limb or die. But, the comic strip artist is dragging out the suspense, tracking Wally’s each step for the past two days; today’s cliffhanger – Wally’s foot is just inches about the landmine that only the comic strip reader sees. I mean, really – Wally survived his original military service in Afghanistan; just married his high school sweetheart (who lost her arm in an accident he caused several years ago); and took his bride to Afghanistan for their honeymoon (during which he joined an NGO to help remove the landmines that instead threatens his life). Jeez. Wally don’t you have any sense?
Plus, is this plot really necessary? Can’t some comic strip creators just cut to the chase, rather than drag out the pain and suffering? Take a lesson from Doonesbury’s Garry Trudeau – B.D.’s injury itself may be short and sudden; it’s his recovery that is the drama and suspense. Then again, the Funky Winkerbean creator makes no sense – he had Funky bouncing back from his nasty divorce rather too easily. There are reasons why I ought to avoid some comics strips.
Looks like I’ll miss this year’s APA alumni picnic; have fun to those who are going…

What state are you?

You’re North Dakota!
You are rather remote, and even inaccessible to the average person. While many would thus describe you as stuck-up, to you it seems more like you’re just stuck. When no one is looking, you yearn to engage in 19th-century European political subterfuge. When looking for peace, head for the garden. But please, be extremely careful around wood-chippers.

Mass Transit
Landed about 30 minutes ago at Chicago O’Hare. A lot of people are trying to reconnect with outbound flights because of the 2.5 hour delay. Getting to the subway took a while – had to walk from terminal 4 to terminal 1 to get to the station. The fare is $1.75, with a 10% bonus if you pay $10 or more at a time. It also does not dispense change. It should be another 10 minutes to get to downtown.

Rain Delay
I’m at LaGuardia waiting for my flight. Apparently there is some sort of weather delay. Also the oven onboard is not working, so we’re SOL on the food. Don’t know if I should wait for deep dish or get something now.

HK
Transitting in HK at the moment. Utilizing DFS Galleries convenient complimentary free email stations. I’m typing on an iMac at the moment and it’s neat. Keyboard is a bit soft.
A couple of hours to blow here waiting for CX888 to NYC by way of Vancouver. Browsed the WHS bookstore to catch up on all the Business and American literature I missed out being in Taiwan for a year. Nothing but China.
It’s almost noon and the weather in HK is overcast, fog/smog ? Can’t see very far other than that this airport is totally surrounded by hills and mountains.
Laters,

Coming back
Tomorrow morning, my first flight back to NYC in, I don’t know how long. It’s been a while for sure and my memory seems to fade on me….
It’s sort of weird to fly “back home” so to speak… but am looking forward to it, albiet with a bit of trepidation. Leaving the office/business for 2 weeks with so much still to do. No choice however, family obligation calls. On Tuesday, my mom will be at Hospital for Joint Diseases for a long awaited hip replacement. Lucky she’s lasted this long with a bum hip.
Anyways, waiting for the missus to get home and get finished packing for the trip.
Catch you all,

Flat tired
Week 2 of the mad proctoring extravaganza.. These 8:30 am to 9:00 pm gigs are wearing me out. Yesterday, during the dinner break, I got P roses to thank her for putting up with me these past weeks. That took a bit of doing and I got back in the nick of time.
As a weekend recap, had my Mom over P’s house for dinner. She loved the cable but hated the dogs. Sunday my sis and her bf came over my mom’ house; I did some of the cooking.
Was not too thrilled about this year’s Union Square fest, but perhaps I’m jaded.=20
My university’s having their alumni weekend activities at the end of this week.
More action soon….

Pea Soup
Passing Worchester on the Mass Pike rght now. The dreaded downpour didn’t materialize, but the fog is really thick. It’s not really stopping the Fong Wah bus driver from pushing 65.
Oh, and happy birthday to AS. Tried sending a note to him but something’s wrong with sending email to him.

A-part of yourself
Being the good boy that I am, and being that P works for them, I donated a pint of blood today at work. After going through the battery of questions (more than 30) and reading which countries were on the bad list, I was led to the bed closest to the room’s TV. Which was good because I was getting kind of faint after the first bag. I did make sure to eat before going, but I should have drunk more liquid. The nurse saw me turning pale, and raised my legs and lowered my head onto a bag od ice. Afterwards, P showed up and stuffed me with traditional blood drive goodies. Still, I felt rather weak and beat up. I wanted to do certain things, and my body wasn’t cooperating. My dad had to do this 3 times a week for 4 years for dialysis, making up about 600 times in his lifetime. Good grief!
Today was 1 month after my dad passed, and we had dinner with my mom at the houe. Thankfully she has found things to occupy her time. The big thing is her high blood pressure, which was a problem for my grandmother. My dad seems to find a way to make himself present; this time it was the low battery sound on the fire detector in his room. I have to believe he is looking out for us.
3 picks for restaurant week on Atlantic Avenue: Atlantic Chip Shop – great batter, Dhakaindian – much better than anything on Montegue St,; Shinjuku Japanese – pretty good but staff was harried; also was the namesake of the Tokyo neighborhood we stayed in the last half of the Japan trip.
